Purpose

Soon you’ll be seeing anti-domestic violence ads in local newspapers and possibly even on cable television, hearing about domestic violence resources on the radio, and receiving invitations to share a personal story of survival if domestic violence has touched your life. You will also be urged to learn how to help someone you know—family, friend, co-worker, neighbor—if they need your help to deal with relationship violence.

It’s all part of the “You deserve better!” public awareness campaign being developed by the DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence and ten partner agencies, with funding from the DC Office of Victim Services.

But you don’t have to wait for the launch of the citywide campaign later this year to get information or to get involved. Since its planning stages in 2005, the partners have been producing resources and inviting community members to be part of the local movement to defeat domestic violence.

In an effort to immediately improve local residents' access to anti-domestic violence resources, the project completed a “makeover” of an existing resource card and developed a brand new resource mini-guide, in addition to planning the core campaign set to launch in Winter 2007, connecting residents to services and empowering everyone to be part of the movement to defeat domestic violence in the District. This website is also a valuable resource for helping local residents understand how to help and how to get involved.

“Our partners on this project are the District’s leading domestic violence service providers. It should come as no surprise that their commitment to building long-term resources is equaled by a commitment to addressing immediate access needs for the community,” said Ken Noyes, co-executive director of the DC Coalition.

“Every agency’s participation in the planning and development of this campaign has been insightful and dedicated. The campaign is a direct result of our team’s collective effort.”
